Many factors such as social, family and economic problems account for a decision to commit suicide. Among these factors, economic motives may have an important role in this case. This paper examines the relationship between unemployment, cost-income disparity, industrialization and population growth on one hand and the rate of suicide on the other hand in all the provinces of Iran within the period of 2000-2010. The method of the study was to analyze the available figures by the Panel Data technique. The results show that there is a positive correlation between unemployment, cost-income disparity, industrialization and suicide rate. However, the variable of population growth is insignificant, which means the growth in population has no noticeable effect on suicide. Therefore, we can reasonably state that, to provide for the health of the nation through reducing the overall suicide rate, it is important to seriously consider income distribution, employment conditions and the negative effect of industrialization in economic planning.
